History

Clark County, Washington lies across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. It was established in 1845, and was named for William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was the first county of Washington and originally covered the entire state.

Clark County began as the District of Vancouver and included parts of the Rocky Mountains and the Columbia River. In 1845 the District of Vancouver changed its name to Vancouver County, and in 1849, Vancouver County changed its name to Clarke County.

Vancouver, the county seat of Clark County, is the largest city, and was named after George Vancouver, a sea captain. Clark County was the "Prune Capital of the World" in the 1920s, and is sometimes referred to as the "Cradle of Pacific Northwest History.”
